San Leandro High School Students Demonstrate the Power of Data to Transform Facilities Management
Simple Data-driven Insights with OSIsoft’s PI System Helps Reduce Energy Usage at the District Offices
San Leandro, California - May 14, 2015 - Students are the architects of the future. Empowering students with simple, intuitive tools to change the world unleashes their creative minds to maximum potential. Using OSIsoft's leading real-time operational intelligence software infrastructure and echoMESH's meters and service, students at San Leandro High School learned how easy it is to make a difference and transform their environment through simple data-driven insights.
As part of a hands-on STEM project (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math educational initiative), students analyzed power usage patterns over time from local public buildings and determined that lights could be turned off for longer periods between work days and unused equipment could be removed from the grid to conserve a significant amount of energy. These simple, quick, but significant wins got them recognition in a keynote at OSIsoft's 2015 Users Conference.
“This form of collaboration between Industry and Academia offers students experiential learning opportunities that allows them to put theory into practice and make a difference,” said Jenny Linton, President of OSIsoft. “San Leandro has been OSIsoft's home for over 35 years as we have grown to become a global leader in software for operational intelligence. We are honored to be able to contribute back to the community with this collaborative model that adds Industry's expertise and technology to the STEM initiative”.
"We are pleased to participate in such an exciting and rewarding project," said Amrish Macedo, Chief Technology Officer at echoMESH. “Using the same platform available to the Corporate Real Estate owner, students at San Leandro High School were able to quickly and effortlessly identify opportunities to reduce energy usage in San Leandro Unified School District's offices. The students were eager learners and the results speak for themselves”.
“STEM education is critical to our country's competitiveness in the future”, said Dr. Rosanna Mucetti, Ed.D, Deputy Superintendent, Educational Services, San Leandro Unified School District. “Hands-on experience is critical to keep students motivated and engaged in the STEM fields, and partnering with Industry is an excellent way to accomplish this. We appreciate the support of OSIsoft and echoMESH in this effort and hope others will emulate this model of collaboration”.
