OSIsoft and University of North Carolina Charlotte Partner for Smart Grid Research
EPIC’s Duke Energy Smart Grid Lab at UNC Charlotte to use the Real-time PI System Data Infrastructure for Multiple Leading Edge Research Projects
San Leandro, CA - September 10, 2014 - OSIsoft and the Energy Production and Infrastructure Center (EPIC) at the University of North Carolina Charlotte announced today that EPIC's Duke Energy Smart Grid Lab will use the real-time PI System data infrastructure for multiple cutting edge research projects that require collecting, storing and serving very high speed data from grid simulators, PMUs and rotating equipment. OSIsoft's PI System was chosen because of its unique ability to scale to manage the high data rates generated by the sensors in such equipment, and simultaneously from a very large number of assets.
EPIC will use the PI System with grid simulators and PMUs in its Smart Grid Lab. The system will also be used for R&D of rotating equipment failure signatures together with their industry partners, including EPRI.
In addition, UNC Charlotte's center for Sustainably Integrated Buildings and Sites (SIBS) will use the system for intelligently managing buildings for improved performance on dimensions such as energy and utility usage.
“We are excited that EPIC's Duke Energy Smart Grid Lab has chosen OSIsoft's PI System for its high speed data management needs for advanced research.” said Martin Otterson, Senior Vice President, Sales, Marketing and Industry. “As the number of sensors and the data generated by them grows exponentially, we encourage universities to take advantage of OSIsoft's education license to push the boundaries of the possible. High speed, high resolution streaming real-time data captured in a database makes it possible to see the world in new ways not possible before.”
“In our Smart Lab we are constantly exploring the art of the possible,” said Dr. Johan Enslin, Director of EPIC. “Most of our new research takes advantage of the very large quantities of real-time streaming data generated by modern sensors. Managing the data and using it intelligently has not been easy. With OSIsoft's PI System, the heavy-lifting of data management is taken care of in the background. This allows us to focus on extracting value from the data.”
