This tutorial explores how a SETPOINT Edge device from Brüel & Kjær Vibro can be used to stream full-featured vibration data (including waveforms) into your PI System, eliminating the need for stand-alone specialized vibration software and without sacrificing the functionality required by rotating machinery engineers and vibration analysts. It will explain how such high-speed data can be placed in standard PI tags, how the system conserves storage space and bandwidth by borrowing lossless compression concepts from the video streaming domain, and how the system allows the user to visualize this data in the specialized formats required by vibration analysts and engineers. I concludes with a discussion of the hardware used to enable this functionality and its compatibility with the monitoring systems likely already present in your plant.

Mr. Chitwood is Vice-President of SETPOINT for Brüel & Kjær Vibro. He began his career in 1978 with Bently Nevada Corporation, designing vibration monitoring instrumentation. He assumed steadily increasing responsibilities there, culminating in Vice-President of Engineering in 1998 and appointment to its board of directors. Mr. Chitwood joined Metrix Instrument Company in 2009, with global business responsibilities for product development, sales, services, quality, manufacturing, and marketing, growing the business two-fold while increasing its profitability. In May of this year, the SETPOINT division was spun off from Metrix and sold to Brüel & Kjær Vibro which has its headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany. During Randy’s career, he has led development of some of the world’s most highly successful vibration monitoring platforms including the Bently Nevada® 3300 and 3500 series products, System 1® software, ADRE® portable data acquisition, and the new SETPOINT® family of products that are now part of Brüel & Kjær Vibro. Mr. Chitwood has authored numerous technical articles on the topic of vibration monitoring. He attended Oregon Tech on a scholarship, graduating with honors in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
