National Grid is an international energy company that owns and operates electricity generation & transmission facilities and gas distribution networks in the UK and the US. Operating under two service contracts with Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), National Grid manages fuel for over 5000 MW of generation capacity that includes 120 million gallons of residual and distillate fuel oil storage. The responsibilities of the Fuels Manager includes procurement, inventory management, scheduling/monitoring, fuel oil quality testing and price forecasting. John Schroeder, the Fuels Manager, explains how the PI System is used in multiple ways to address these challenges efficiently and quickly. A major benefit is that multiple scenario analyses are made possible leading to better decision-making for optimizing operations.
