Using the PI System for Full-Featured Vibration Monitoring
This presentation explores the use of the PI System as the infrastructure for collection and visualization of machinery condition monitoring data, including high-speed vibration waveforms and specialized data presentation formats such as shaft orbits, vibration spectra, bode / polar plots, and others. Historically, the vibration data collection rates necessary to allow detailed machinery diagnostics were too fast to entertain use of the plant's process historian, particularly when a system was going to encompass dozens or hundreds of vibration channels. As a result, stand-alone vibration monitoring software infrastructures with their own proprietary databases, servers, display clients, security models, and network connections evolved out of necessity to handle the data collection speeds required. However, as the capabilities of the PI System have improved, now surpassing one million tags per second, the ability to treat vibration waveforms as simply another type of time series data in the PI System database has become practical and is already in use at a dozen end user sites globally.

Steve Sabin
Steve Sabin began work in 1989 as a registered professional engineer in Canada, providing applications engineering support for vibration monitoring instrumentation. He was employed by Bently Nevada Corporation / GE Energy between 1989 and 2010, holding a variety of sales, marketing, and product development roles. He also served as executive editor of ORBIT magazine from 1995 until 2010 and authored 100 articles, white papers, and technical documents pertaining to vibration monitoring instrumentation. He is now director of product management and marketing with Metrix Instrument Company and a key member of the development team for its new digital proximity, machinery protection, and condition monitoring offerings. He has served as the secretary of American Petroleum Institute Standard 670 since 1996. Sabin received his BS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Oregon State University in 1988, graduating summa cum laude.

Randall Chitwood
Randall Chitwood is VP of Metrix SETPOINT. He began his career in 1978 with Bently Nevada, designing vibration monitoring instrumentation. He assumed steadily increasing responsibilities, culminating in Vice-President of Engineering in 1998 and appointment to its board of directors. Chitwood joined Metrix in 2009, with global business responsibilities for product development, sales, services, quality, manufacturing, and marketing, doubling the business while increasing its profitability. During his career, he has led development of some of the world’s most highly successful vibration monitoring platforms including Bently Nevada® 3300 and 3500 series products, System 1® software, ADRE® portable data acquisition, and the new SETPOINT® family of products for Metrix. Chitwood has authored numerous technical articles on vibration monitoring. He attended Oregon Tech on a scholarship, graduating with honors in 1978 with a BS in Electrical Engineering.
