Using PI to Back-Test Usage and Condition Based Maintenance Strategies to Predict Quantifiable Benefits Prior to Deployment in Asset Management
This presentation describes use of the PI System to back-test usage and condition based maintenance strategies to predict quantifiable benefits prior to deploying them to Asset Management Systems. Businesses realize value with decreased PM (preventive maintenance) and CM (corrective maintenance) work orders, savings in labor hours, reductions in spare parts and inventory for maintenance, and improved operations reliability due to responsive maintenance personnel with ready access to relevant operations data. Several asset types such as fans, pumps, motors, pulverizers, filters, compressors, heat exchangers, breakers, transformers, sensors and transmitters etc. and maintenance events related to electrical, mechanical, and instrument and controls have been covered to validate this methodology. Included are work management and plant maintenance use cases from DTE Energy (in power generation) with IBM Tivoli-Maximo and Basin Electric (in power generation) with Ventyx AssetSuite (previously Indus Passport). The methodology discussed here is equally applicable to other asset types and other industries, including IT and data centers.

Sebastien JY Cournoyer started his career in maintenance and reliability as a Naval Electronics Technician in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1994. He is currently with Detroit Edison as a Work Management Specialist at the Belle River Plant in Michigan. Prior to DTE, he worked for Cargill Salt as a Reliability Project Manager. He is a CMRP (Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional) and he is currently pursuing a Lean Six Sigma Certification.

Gopal GopalKrishnan has been involved in several projects involving the PI System since the mid 90s, including software development and technical and sales support. He is currently working in the Enterprise and Asset Integration group based in Yardley, PA. His interests include data mining, lean manufacturing, energy efficiency, operations excellence, manufacturing intelligence and Green initiatives in DataCenters. He has a Master’ degree in Chemical Engineering, continuing education in Business Administration and is a Registered Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania.

Larry has 25+ years experience in maintenance at 3 separate coal fired power plant facilities. He currently serves as Maintenance Planner/Scheduler at Basin’s Leland Olds station in North Dakota. Prior to this, he spent a number of years in Instrumentation & Control, responsible for the installation, configuration, and tuning of DCS control systems (Bailey Infi-90, Emerson Ovation) and their associated field devices.
