The complexity of renewable energy systems can challenge the capabilities of traditional communications technologies that use number based addressing schemes to access data in devices. Some renewable applications, such as wind power systems, are inherently more complex because they are made up of many interlocking functions each with potentially thousands of points of data. Trying to integrate such systems using traditional approaches designed for simple devices is cumbersome, costly, and fragile. Fortunately, new standards like IEC 61850 and IEC 61400-25 are available that provide a model-driven approach to communications to enable access to data in the context of a representative data model. Combining the capabilities of the OSIsoft PI Asset Framework (AF) and the model driven approach of IEC 61850 and IEC 61400 provides significant value to wind power providers enabling them to more effectively manager their resources. This presentation will provide an overview of the unique capabilities and benefits of using IEC 61850 and IEC 61400 and illustrate how they can be integrated with the PI System to deliver value in renewables applications.
