Use of PI and Sigmafine in the Water Industry
The author led the first application of Sigmafine into the water industry and the subsequent two expansions. This paper gives an overview of the authors experience and predictions on how the PI System and Sigmafine can benefit the water industry. In the last three decades water has increased dramatically in value and cost in both the clean water and waste utilities. This is due to a number of factors, in particular environmental issues, population growth, urbanization, and in some areas climate change. Water will never again be a free commodity, and indeed the cost is likely to continue rising at an even faster rate. The Water and Waste utilities now realize that the implementation of industry standard control, SCADA, plant information and flow accounting are now fully justifiable and that data quality is vital to the stewardship of their valuable water assets. The paper covers the real $ benefits of implementing the PI System and Sigmafine to cover flow balancing and accounting and data quality improvements which can be over $2 million per year for a $5 million household utility.

Mr Neve was born in Kingston Surrey in 1943, educated at Tiffin Grammar school and at Manchester University and has a degree in Chemical Engineering, gained in 1964. Since then he has spent 35 years in leading edge automation and process control working all over the world. He worked for the multinational companies Foxboro, Exxon, and the three organizations he founded and managed KBC Process Automation (now Honeywell High Spec Solutions), BDN Consultants, and PACSCOM. Most of this time was spent pioneering digital control of refining and petrochemical plants. KBC supplies high level process consulting and PACS produces automation products including radio data networks. He has presented many papers over the years on control, measurement and communications. At KBC PA he was responsible for the project that gave birth to Sigmafine now part of the OSIsoft stable. As a principal consultant of the international process system integrator and consulting company REX, he continues to pioneer the use of data reconciliation in the Water industry.
