Transmission & Distribution Live Q&A Session - High-Performance Microgrids, DERMS [PXiSE Energy Solutions]
The recent natural disasters have created a demand for the integration of microgrids and more distributed energy into the power distribution system. Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC), part of the Sonoma County Junior College District, was severely impacted by the October 2017 wildfires. In 2018, the 100+ acre SRJC campus was the selected site for a microgrid demonstration project that will integrate three types of Distributed Energy Resource (DER) elements: PV generation, electrical energy storage, and load reduction and load control systems, all managed by a single microgrid controller. This high-performance microgrid is furthering technological advancement and innovation for the campus, uncovering hidden value opportunities in the power system by optimizing generation and load flexibility, enhancing power quality of the surrounding grid using renewable resources, and demonstrating utility and campus collaboration for successful integration.

Speaker
David Liebman
David Liebman, Energy and Sustainability Manager at SRJC, will lead the conversation to describe the college’s microgrid roadmap and how public entities (such as municipalities, universities, hospitals, and schools) can be leaders in DER integration. David will describe SRJC’s project drivers and constraints, project phasing and long-term scalability goals, the benefits of incorporating renewable energy resources with storage, and the high-performance capabilities enabled by having a centralized, real-time controller manage the microgrid and other campus DERs.
