Eskom generates about 95% of the electricity used in South Africa with a customer base of more than 3.9 million. To increase supply with the growing demand for electricity, Eskom revitalized three older power stations, but faced challenges with these Returned to Service (RTS) facilities including: availability and reliability issues with these RTS plants, lack of sufficient skilled resources to support operations and growth, and the need to provide remote and real-time support to plant operations to help leverage a limited subject matter expert base. This presentation discusses how Eskom used the PI System to enable the Remote Monitoring & Diagnostic Center (RMDC) in Middleburg to provde state of the art decision support technology to power stations.
