Since the 1990s the Rijeka refinery has implemented various digital control and monitoring systems. Data was captured from a variety of sources including refinery processes, laboratory analyses, environmental monitoring, material movements and manual entries. However, the approach resulted in islands of information with their own unique infrastructures and consoles/workstations. Some historical data was accessible on the business network, but there was no unified view across the different systems.
The problem was resolved with the implementation of the PI System infrastructure. The PI System provides an integrated view across systems and has enabled integration with applications such as for material balance (Sigmafine), planning and scheduling (Orion), environmental monitoring, production optimization, asset management etc. Synthesis (SharePoint and PI WebParts) enables visualization of raw and calculated data, with role-based dashboards serving managers through engineers."
