In PG&E Smart Grid Deployment Plan, an enterprise "Data Historian Foundation" was identified as one of the PG&E "Foundational and Cross-Cutting Initiatives". The objective is to implement an enhanced data platform for managing and analyzing operational data with select user groups in electric transmission, gas operations, power generation, and energy procurement. In June, 2011, PG&E signed the contract with OSIsoft and has become a new PI T&D customer. By the end of 2011, the PI System was deployed and integrated with electric transmission, gas operations and power generation lines of business. The PI System serves as the central data archiving and analysis system for all time-series operational data. PG&E's vision is to enable the operators, engineers, managers and executives to analyze, visualize, and share operational and business data in a manner that not only makes the most sense to them, but also informs intelligent decision-making throughout the utility value chain. The benefits of this capability include productivity improvements, situational awareness, reliability improvements, and regulatory compliance. In this presentation, we will show the journey of the PI System at PG&E, the current PI System implementation status, and the future plan.

David spearheaded the business case for the PI System and the subsequent deployment. He is now leading the adoption of the PI System across four lines of business. David has held multiple roles at PG&E, ranging from electric transmission special projects to business development and corporate strategy. Prior to joining PG&E, David was an engineer at NASA working on the International Space Station. David has earned an MBA from the University of Michigan and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas.
