The Death of a Spreadsheet – Streamlining Gas Turbine Operations and Maintenance Reporting
Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems America (MHPSA), an industry leader in gas turbine technology, manufactures and services gas turbines ranging from 120MW to 320MW. The MHPSA Remote Monitoring Center (RMC) monitors 50+ gas turbines across the Americas. The RMC uses the OSIsoft PI System to drive R&D, mitigate potential issues, and develop reports for customers.
Previously, the RMC would generate hundreds of reports each quarter; utilizing Excel, PI Data Link, and VBA Macros. Numerous versions of spreadsheets existed and data manipulation was not optimized. Report approval workflow was handled manually and broken macros had the potential to create delays. Sensing continued spreadsheet difficulties, the RMC and DST Controls developed a solution for streamlining the report life cycle. The new system allows engineers to efficiently review and manage reports. Overhead required to manage Excel based reports has been eliminated - allowing for more time focused on other customer needs.
