Since the installation of the PI System in 2000, much has changed in the economic environment. This presentation continues the story first told at UC2007 and updated at UC2010 with this chapter documenting how the continually evolving PI System has enabled SunChemical to survive in a very difficult business and reinforces the theme of the UC – “The Power of Data - Thriving in a World of Change” except that surviving would be more appropriate. Without the PI System, the story would have most likely ended several years ago. While there a numerous applications that we have built using the PI System, the presentation will focus on how we have evolved from a reactive to a proactive, collaborative approach for energy and quality management using some of the advanced features of PI-2010 including PI-AF, PI-ACE, PI-Batch, and PI-SDK based applications with PI-Process Book as the primary visualization tool. One application that has had great impact on our bottom line is an energy model that is used for budgets and strategic planning. Utilizing the PI System’s advanced functionally, in particular PI-AF and PI-Batch, has enabled the ability to understand component based energy utilization and associated portfolio quality optimization.The PI-System has continued to evolve from a historian to an infrastructure for streaming data and events with no limitations in implementing our imagination to address complex and changing business needs.

Francis Lauryssens
Francis Lauryssens has held different positions at Sun in the last 20 years, with eight of those years as the PI Systems Specialist. He has also worked as a Six Sigma greenbelt where he specialized in data retrieving and OEE. He provides support to Black Belts with data reports coming from PI and installed several control plans using PI. Mr. Lauryssens is originally from Belgium and was transferred to the U.S. by Sun in 2002.
