PI Coresight was renamed PI Vision in 2017
Shell's strategy to become the most competitive energy company has a strong dependency on getting value out of data. Data is considered to be a key asset and a corner stone for Operational Intelligence. To maximize the value generation based on operational data, Shell has introduced the enterprise wide platform approach for collecting, processing and visualization of operational data. The Shell Smart Solution Platform is an integration technology based on components of various suppliers. The OSIsoft infrastructure is a key building block for the Smart Solutions Platform. At various layers of the SSP platform, OSIsoft components are used to deliver the required functionality. All real time data is integrated on a global level per business unit. Real time data can be seamlessly integrated with data coming from other systems (Data Service Layer). In case data is changed as part of the integration or aggregation, the integrated/aggregated values can be stored in a data warehouse based on SAP-HANA. Functions like Asset definitions (PI Server's Asset Framework) in combination with Microsoft MDS help to simplify access to the data and create consistency based on templates and data models. Template based calculations (PI Server's Asset Analytics) are used to perform base analytics on the data. The PI Server's Event Frames are used to identify and store key operational events. Visualization of data is handled via Design Studio and KendoUI toolkit in combination with PI Coresight and PI ProcessBook displays.
The above platform components form the essential building blocks to build Smart applications to drive Operational Intelligence. Based on this OI foundation, a toolkit is built for Proactive Technical Monitoring. This toolkit is developed to assist operations with real time information about the status of equipment and alerts in case conditions are outside constraints. In combination with modelling services (Matlab or SAS), functions are created for predictive maintenance (Smart Perform)."

John de Koning
John de Koning is the P&T TaCIT Technology Manager, Enterprise Solutions at Shell Global Solutions B.V. As a Technology Manager John is responsible for Operational Intelligence or as it is called within Shell; SMART Solutions. Included in this scope is the Shell PI Center of Excellence. The PI-CoE is driving standardization, simplification and Enterprise deployments of the OSIsoft tool suite.
John started within the Oil & Gas Manufacturing area as a consumer of operational data to optimize production processes. After deploying many use cases the transition was made to the IT side to assist with deploying IT toolkits to manufacturing toolkits. With the introduction of the OSIsoft tool suite, the journey was started to transform the local approach within Shell to a centralized approach."
