This presentation shows how Xcel Energy and its technology partners are constructing the nation’s first SmartGridCity™ in Boulder, Colorado. The groundbreaking project, announced in March 2008, involves the entire energy pathway from generation to delivery and use of electricity, and encompasses the densest concentration of smart grid technologies in a single location to date. When fully integrated, these technologies will provide information allowing customers to be more actively engaged in how they use energy and manage their energy budget. The smart grid has the potential for improving electric reliability and for creating a more responsive and sustainable electricity grid.

Michael Lamb
As managing director of IT Operations & Strategy, Michael Lamb is responsible for all components of IT delivery including applications, infrastructure, customer satisfaction, and vendor relationships. Michael has extensive experience in change management, systems improvement, operations, engineering, and has been responsible for projects and crews across ten states. He has two decades of service with Xcel Energy and Northern States Power. Prior to joining IT in September 2007, Michael was Xcel Energy’s Executive Director of Utility Innovations where he was responsible for initiating Xcel Energy’s smart grid effort. Immediately prior to that, Michael was General Manager of Distribution Engineering and Emergency Response, where he oversaw nearly 300 emergency first responders and support personnel and guided the utility through severe weather events impacting its delivery system. He served as General Manager of Delivery Engineering and Design from 2000 to 2003, and has held various leadership positions in power delivery, operations and planning dating back to 1993. Michael earned a master of business administration degree from the University of St. Thomas. He also holds both a bachelor of electrical engineering and a bachelor of science in economics from the University of Minnesota, and is a graduate of the Minnesota Executive Program at the Carlson School of Management.
