In 2008, Sempra Utilities decided to implement a full-blown real-time CBM project as the first in-action project from OpEx 20/20 Smart Grid Program. The project is the first of its kind in the T&D utility industry, an end-to-end solution, from installing the sensors for substation equipment (i.e. transformers, circuit breakers, etc.) monitoring, through the communications to substation gateways and enterprise gateways, all the way to the back office. The PI System/Infrastructure was chosen for the entire back office data server, as well as analytics, visualization and notifications engine. Project Phase I was successfully completed within 3 months, including one transmission substation and one distribution substation. The Project Phase II starting in 2009, will last for the next several years, including full deployment on 130+ substations throughout the entire SDG&E service territory.
