This presentation will address issues unique to those customers charged with running large (100,000+ point) mission-critical PI installations. Drawing extensively from fieldwork performed at the California Independent System Operator (ISO), one of the largest PI installations in the world, the presentation will detail strategies that the authors have used to improve performance and reliability. Included will be tactics to create and synchronize redundant servers, to tune the archive for optimal user and system performance and some the tradeoffs inherent in the different approaches.

Christopher Russo
Christopher is the Founder and Principal of Russo & Associates. He was originally trained as a power systems engineer with engineering and policy degrees from Tufts University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Prior to the founding of Russo & Associates, he was the Plant Engineer for the MIT Cogeneration Project, managing the permitting, engineering, and startup of the gas turbine facility on the Cambridge campus, in addition to performing some of the first advanced web development work with the PI system. As a PI consultant, he has provided services to customers in the energy industry, including configuration, planning, management and application development. In addition, he spent part of 1998 as visiting researcher at ABB Corporate Research in Baden, Switzerland where he helped to plan and initiate the China Energy Technology Program. In 1999, he was also visiting engineer at the MIT Energy Laboratory, where his research focused on modeling of the economic and environmental aspects of power generation.
