MOL Group is one of the largest oil and gas companies in the middle European region. In addition to several initiatives related to energy efficiency MOL plans to increase their operational efficiency with better production and energy forecasting. As a large industrial consumer, MOL Group has to pay for the consumed natural gas, but also has to buy the availability of the daily natural gas capacity. The reserved daily natural gas capacity is practically a daily maximum amount which can be consumed. This so called entry maximum has to be declared and is fixed for a period of two years. Any consumption over the entry maximum results in a very high penalty, so the entry maximum has to be high enough to handle all possible disturbances in the process.
This presentation will show a solution where operational intelligence with the PI System components was used to decrease the daily entry maximum capacity via an effective prediction and alerting system for energy planning. The entry capacity maximum is a significant part of the cost of natural gas. Using this new PI System-based solution MOL was able to decrease the energy cost of the refinery without changes in natural gas consumption. This change resulted in around 240 000 EUR yearly savings for MOL Hungary."

Gábor Mucsina is a Process Information Engineer at MOL Group with process information and process automation responsibilities. His main role is to support the business with proper tools and solutions for planning, process optimization or process safety management. He has been working with the PI System as an administrator since 2013 and has participated in the development of many PI System-based solutions being used in the Danube Refinery.
