Real Time Operational Intelligence with the PI System and Envoy Development Process Monitor
Clearwater Paper has used the PI System for years. As systems grow more complex and staffs become leaner and less experienced, we needed a better way to identify and predict reliability and quality issues. Trends are great, but there are too many tags to parse through daily. We needed a tool to identify tags outside of statistical limits—duration and magnitude—in a complex grade mix.
Envoy Process Monitor collects data from the PI System and—much like other engines index the web—indexes data statistically, identifying tags outside of statistical limits and tags that correlate with changes in KPIs, some of which might be subtle but vital. Users identify best grade runs to automatically calculate targets/limits for all tags in a process. Now we have real-time analysis by grade for all tags, not just a handful. The system can be further leveraged using an AF model. Targets/limits created in the Envoy database can be fed to PI AF tag attributes, so that they change automatically with grade changes.

Troy Foede
Troy Foede is the West Region Black Belt on the Strategic Performance Team at Clearwater Paper. He started working with PI as a chemical supplier at a large integrated Kraft mill, followed by leading data analysis efforts with a fabric supplier across North America. Jumping into software development, Troy contributed to advancing data mining tools with a software company while serving as lead PI developer at a newsprint mill. Ultimately, this experience led to roles as PI admin, senior process engineer, and production superintendent while picking up a Six Sigma Black Belt. At Clearwater Paper since 2011, he has used Envoy Development to bring next-level data analysis and monitoring of processes to the pulp, paper, and tissue mills. In his current role, Troy is using all of this background in paper and data systems to develop highly capable problem solvers throughout Clearwater Paper.
