Real-time GIS Data for Optimized Operations (GLWater,DWSD)
Data is everywhere and can be overwhelming. The Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) water and sewer system is made up of 55+ major facilities and 500+ remote monitoring locations. These facilities generate a tremendous amount of data 24/7/365. Spatial visualization and integration of the massive data can be challenging but it provides a great benefit to operations and maintenance personnel and can optimize water and wastewater operations. GLWA operations and IT staff developed real-time water and wastewater maps that enhance insights into the operations for all levels of employees. This application is available to users via mobile and on the desktop.

Biren Saparia
Biren Saparia is Systems Control System Manager for the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA), the third largest municipal water and sewer utility in the United States. The GLWA provides services to more than 4 million retail and wholesale customers in Southeast Michigan. Biren Saparia leads the operation and maintenance group for water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
Prior to joining the GLWA, Biren Saparia was Process Control Engineer at Detroit-based Process Controls and Instrumentation LLC, a systems integrator of control systems, where he worked on a multi-year project to modernize the DWSD’s vast water and wastewater treatment complexes with control and SCADA solution. This automation and control solution helps GLWA improve operational efficiency, maintain regulatory and environmental compliance and accommodate future system expansion. This consisted of five water treatment plants, 19 treated water booster pump stations, five high-lift pump stations, 10 wastewater pump stations, three combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) basins, and more than 200 remote radio telemetry sites monitoring level, pressure and discharge.
