Magnitude.io brings K-20 learning right to the edge of discovery. Their primary instrument, the CanSat, enables students to learn about the world around them through the integration of Science and Engineering practice. Magnitude works with several school districts in California integrating the new Next Generation Science Standards.
San Leandro Unified School District has launched a multi-phase GATE (Gifted and Talented) middle school project. Along side these students, science classes at the High School are investigating phenomenon through the Next Generation Science Standards.
Phase I is an introduction to the sensors and the world of data science with the CanSat. A satellite in a soda can, the CanSat measures barometric pressure, temperature and humidity, acceleration, a magnetometer with GPS, and break outs to add CO2 and NOX sensors. The capstone of Phase I is a high altitude balloon launch that will reach an altitude over 100,000 feet.
Phase II in fall 2016 will have students develop and install air quality and environmental monitors sending data to Qi to from sensors at school sites to analyze near real time and historic data."
