The aluminum smelters division of the Alcoa Global Primary Products (GPP) business began with the assistance of OSIsoft an ambitious data infrastructure project known in Alcoa GPP as the ''Smart Manufacturing Project''. By regrouping and organizing all production data at each plant into a single repository and data model, Alcoa has successfully supplied its employees an efficient, powerful, and easy to use source with which to gain a global insight into operations. Employees can now count on a flexible toolset enabling information sharing, increased operational efficiency, and proactive decision making in a dynamic and highly competitive environment. The global approach of the deployment and the Alcoa GPP utilization has fostered an ever expanding environment of best practice sharing and leveraging of solutions between locations.
