Predicting Leakage Events Across Yorkshire Using the PI System
Effective Leakage Management involves the automated monitoring of flows and pressures in the clean water distribution system, to check for anomalies (a sudden unusual drop in pressure or increase in flow at a meter, or chain of meters, may indicate a leak) and to bring such events promptly to the attention of the relevant staff. Reacting to increasing pressure in recent years to reach set regulatory leakage targets, Yorkshire Water launched the “RTNet project”, which is focused on utilising data from an expanded deployment of flow and pressure loggers across its network in order to provide a much more proactive identification of possible leakage conditions. This talk will review leakage challenge and performance commitments, the approach and technology using the PI System to profile leakage events and the business outcome of implementing the solution.

Andrew Sewell
Andrew joined the Yorkshire Water Services in the late 1990’s from Unilever. Progressing through the company’s engineering teams to the position today of Telemetry Manager. With over 20 years experience in operational technology namely, SCADA, PLC, and automation systems.
In his time at Yorkshire Water, Andrew has worked on several strategic projects:
- Realtime-WRAP: optimising the water supply availability & movements across Yorkshire.
- Realtime-BwD: to meet the UK Bathing Water Directive utilising OSISoft technologies to predict bathing water quality across the Yorkshire.
- Visible Networks: Again using OSIsoft to predict water distribution network leakage & pressure events
His knowledge and expertise extends from first principles, to developing telemetry strategies to fulfill business requirements. He is now leading a program of work to expose operational data allowing data scientist to unlock efficiencies in Yorkshire Water using OSIsoft PI System technologies.
