Plant to Enterprise in a Multi-Site Enviroment
This presentation illustrates Akzo Nobel Base Chemicals’ strategy to enable Manufacturing Excellence in a multi-site, multi-country and multi-cultural environment. In 2004 Akzo Nobel Base Chemicals initiated a program to harmonize all its chemical plants using OSIsoft PI. The main objective was to create a uniform environment for all plants so they could harmonize plant information, create one-way-of-working on production accounting and engage better benchmark plant performance. From a business point of view, this program cleared a path to improved quality and overall business performance. At the UC2006 in Frankfurt, during the middle of their program, they presented a paper on the subject. They now report substantial progress and interesting lessons learned. Since 2006 they adapted seven more plants to this harmonization program, implemented an interface with SAP based on RLINK, and intend to connect 3 more plants, one of them on the Asian continent. Furthermore, they have started a pilot project to set up a PI Portal using RtWebParts. Implementing High Availability will be a next important step to improve availability and quality of PI. This will be a complex project because many data sources are connected to PI and many systems and organizations depend on PI information. Significance: “We could never have foreseen how quick this would fly through the organization. It was a direct hit. It is becoming more and more clear to Akzo Nobel that PI is becoming an Achilles' tendon for the daily operation of all plants.”
