As the contracted Balancing Authority (BA) operator for BANC (BA Northern California), SMUD has been utilizing the PI System since 2003 in a traditional way, starting from operations, and then throughout SMUD lines of business units. In 2009, SMUD received $127.5M DOE SGIG award (63% of the SGIG funds that went to California) for a $308M project – SmartSacramento. SMUD decided to take PI System to the next level as the enterprise data infrastructure and signed the EA-Enterprise Agreement with OSIsoft in 2012. PI System will be supporting SMUD Smart Grid initiatives, including distribution automation and integrating the meter data along with grid connectivity model as the operational meter data. SMUD won the Smart Grid Project of the Year for SmartSacramento and received the award at DistribuTECH in January 2013.
