As demands for grid stability and reliability have increased, real-time monitoring of the grid has become increasingly important. The Mexican national utility company, Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE), understands that a WAMS (Wide Area Measurement System) can be used for advanced real-time monitoring of the grid and decided to use the PI System as part of the solution. CFE plans to implement a PI System based MODICOSEN (Sistema de Monitoreo Dinamico y Control del Systema Electrico Nacional) to monitor Mexico’s electrical grid in real-time with the purpose of optimizing the grid’s operations and preventing blackouts. CFE intends to use MODICOSEN to improve stability analysis, alarming, dispatching, accident analysis, and parameter differentiation. The key feature of this system is the development and deployment of the Phasor Data Analyzer (PDA) on top of the I System and SISCO’s Unified Analytic Platform (UAP) products and technology. This PDA provides a highly available means of analyzing and storing real-time and historical phasor data. It will also display the dynamic behavior of the power grid for real-time monitoring. The PDA leverages standard out-of-the-box PI System interfaces (IEEE C37.118 and FFT), analytics and visualization tools to provide flexible and powerful applications and advanced graphical displays and reports. Use of the PI System infrastructure enables versatile data access and allows future enterprise applications to efficiently and economically integrate synchrophasor data with other types of operations and maintenance data from other CFE systems and applications.
