This presentation will demonstrate how the California ISO has been using the PI System since 2000. The PI System has become part of CAISO's mission critical infrastructure, and widely used by control room generation, transmission, market and renewables operators, planning and operations engineers, compliance teams and many others. Over the years the CAISO PI System has developed into a critical “real-time” environment which includes over 1,000 PI ProcessBook and PI DataLink applications built on PI High Availability (PI HA) architecture. The speakers will present recent PI System architecture redesigns (due to meeting certain NERC CIP requirements) for the incorporation of synchrophasor data, and the implementation and utilization of PI AF, etc. CAISO has also implemented a unique “content management” tool to organize and present PI ProcessBook displays (used with daily grid maintenance and outages) that “expire” when the work is complete. This process makes certain that all PI System displays are current, valid and relevant to all the users. The presentation will also show some creative and innovative PI System visualization and applications which were developed by operators and end-users and displayed on the 85-foot wide video wall in the control center in Folsom, CA, as well as on the video wall in the control center in Alhambra, CA, and the training simulator rooms.
