Located in Sept-Iles (QC) Canada, the Alouette smelter is the largest primary aluminum smelting facility in the Americas and the fifth largest in the world. With an investment of $1.4 billion, its annual production will rise from 245,000 to 550,000 tpy (tons per year) and employ a total of 900 people at the smelter. The expansion project has been lead by a co-enterprise between SNC Lavalin and Hatch & Associates (SLH) with a team of 55 professionals. The process control, automation and systems team has completed the integration of the systems with a totally integrated team under a unified management. This approach has resulted in the delivery of an extremely high performing system, which includes PI, at a lower cost within a very tight schedule. The resulting system allows quick data search, reporting the mission critical data, displaying dashboard, managing the power consumption data, casting operations and yield data. With more than 60,000 tags installed, PI is deployed in the existing and new operations of Alouette. PI is used by the different users through Alouette Production Intranet. PDI are accessed using ActiveView by plant operators, supervisors, manager and procurement. One of the project key objectives was to provide production information easily. That objective was achieved with the production intranet. Extensive use was made of PI ACE, Batch, BatchView, ActiveView, and SQC. This presentation details the technical aspects of various projects as well as the resulting benefits.
