The International Engineering Consortium (IEC) 61850 standard was initially developed for intra-substation device communications. Today it is being globally used as a standard for substations, wind power, hydroelectric, and distributed generation. This presentation will discuss IEC 61850 fundamentals, the use of 61850 in an upcoming United Kingdom wind power project, and how RtPM/PI can be utilized as part of a 61850 infrastructure.
