Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) is Mexico’s national electric power utility, serving nearly 28 million customers, with 85,000 employees and 774 generation units. In a difficult economy, CFE CENACE (Centro Nacional de Control de la Energía) has been facing the challenges of higher costs and an increasingly complex mix of generation resources. CFE wanted a Business Intelligence (BI) solution for its energy generation infrastructure to provide the timely decision making to better manage the evolving energy market. That solution needed to offer timely information, the potential for company-wide use, and integrated tools for collaboration and communication. CENACE now has that solution. Thanks to OSIsoft and Microsoft technologies, in 2010, CFE implemented the BI applications. CFE executives and managers can gain a better, faster, and more collaborative BI, with real-time operational data, a self-service model, and easy, familiar tools for data access and analysis. The improvement of generation efficiency and availability could potentially save CFE millions of dollars per year. The support staff being able to redeploy and create the self-service BI applications throughout the company also will bring tremendous IT savings.
