Verve Energy is Western Australia's leading energy producer, controlling 60% of the market. Verve Energy faced the challenge that all plant operational data was only accessible on the generation site. This proved a formidable barrier to having an up-to-date fleet overview of key indicators and improving the company's fuel efficiency and maintenance regime. To address this challenge a companywide program of work was initiated to bring all operational data together in a Plant Operational Information Platform, and establish a state-of-the-art analysis solution on top. In April 2012 an OSIsoft PI System was implemented to facilitate both operational data store as well as the analysis functionality. Live data feeds from all relevant source systems were established. This included site-based historians, chemical analysis systems, incident reporting systems and various external information feeds such as fuel prices, weather information and dispatch forecasts.In parallel to the technology implementation, a business change work stream was initiated. The purpose of this work stream was to catalyze and accelerate the realization of (financial) benefits of the OSIsoft PI System implementation. This included the establishment of user groups, organization of robust business support, setting up a benefits realization framework and actively facilitating the definition and realization of business benefits.
