Engineers and managers in oil & gas have long harnessed time series operational data to improve equipment monitoring, downtime tracking, process optimization, and overall decision-making. While time series data has always been readily understood by operations personnel, it has not always been utilised by other personnel. In the present competitive climate, oil & gas companies face more pressure than ever to maximize productivity, lower costs and extend the lifespan of their assets. As a result, more enterprises are connecting systems to share operational data within a single enterprise infrastructure, such as the PI System.
This presentation will explain the value of the PI System as an enterprise-wide data infrastructure that brings operational data from sensors and gateways to analytic tools and decision-makers. This infrastructure not only supports interconnectivity and sharing of data between operational systems, but can also support data integration between the plant floor and the ever growing IT domains of business intelligence systems, map based 'GIS' interfaces, and advanced 'Big Data' analytics tools. The presentation will also introduce some of the business benefits that can be reaped from such a system, including process monitoring and optimization, asset maintenance and integrity, worker safety, remote operations and automation.
