Qatar Power (Q Power) is a full facility generating 1,025 MW of power and producing 60 MIGD water. It is an independent power and water producer in the State of Qatar. Q Power faces a huge fluctuation in energy demand which varies from 1025 MW in summer to 300 MW in winter. At Q Power the PI System is being utilized in an effective way to improve plant efficiency, to troubleshoot issues, to reduce seawater consumption and for condition based monitoring. This has improved the O&M monitoring capabilities. The PI System is also being used to monitor the heat stress during the summer months to avoid health, safety and environment (HSE) related incidents. As a result Q Power has considerably improved the HSE performance in relation to heat stress. In the last 1.5 years Q Power has successfully achieved savings of 1.3 Million USD by optimizing the use of seawater and fuel gas resources which are readily available in the Middle East. These savings obtained through improvement initiatives helped Q Power to achieve a higher rate of return while continuing to maintain the plant in a healthy state. In conclusion, the PI System tools used at Q Power have proven to be invaluable in helping the plant operate at optimum efficiency.
