Operational Intelligence in Pipeline Natural Gas Transmission
Gas Atacama transports natural gas from wells in Argentina to industrial clients and power plant generator in Northern Chile. The gas pipeline runs for 1200km traversing the Andes mountain and the Chile desert. Control stations are installed along the pipeline with valves and compressor stations. A satellite-based SCADA system collects real-time data with a remote control center located in Santiago, 5000km from the pipeline. The PI System plays a crucial role in the pipeline management. Besides the reporting and visualization functions, advanced ACE/MDB functions will be described where online models of the pipeline, the main control valves, and the compressors are implemented. This allows the operators and engineers to compare the actual operation against the desired or standard patterns providing early alerts for deviations as well as scenario analysis.

Speaker
Wilson Navarrete
Wilson Navarrete holds an Electrical Engineering degree from the Universidad de Chile, with further specialized studies in the Operation and Control of Natural Gas Systems at the Faculty of Engineering, Gas and Petroleum Institute, University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. For the last ten years, Wilson Navarrete has worked on the engineering, installation and operation of the Gas Pipeline SCADA and PI information system since its conception at Gasatacama Chile Ltda. In recent years, most of Mr. Navarrete’s work has been in implementating advanced models for the perfomance and reliable monitoring of the pipeline, as well as implementing newer network technologies for data gathering. Before joining Gas Atacama, Mr. Navarrete worked for five years as a process control engineer in an engineering company, developing projects for the petrochem, energy, and mining industries.
