Barrick Gold’s Pueblo Viejo mine has produced more than 1,000,000 ounces of gold since it began gold production in 2012. Maintaining operations within desired parameters is the key to making this gold production profitable in today's markets, but obtaining reliable real-time data for decision-making is a challenge. Barrick Pueblo Viejo uses the PI System, including PI Asset Framework, PI Batch, PI ProcessBook, PI Coresight, and PI DataLink, as an efficient tool for obtaining, storing, and analyzing data generated in the gold production process. With the PI System, they can improve decision making and better understand events in the production process. The PI System ensures automation in the generation and capture of data and saves time in creating general reports, balance sheets, and calculations, which ultimately translates into savings by giving end-users the right information at the right moment.

Lucas Marte
Lucas Marte is a Metallurgist Technician at Barrick Gold responsible for monitoring, assessing, and controlling ore and limestone mineral plant processing. He also manages Contained Metals Inventory (CMI) and production reports. He has more than 7 years of experience in the engineering industry and 3 years of experience in the mining industry. In that time, he has developed standard operating procedures that aid in process optimization and trouble shooting of mining processes. He has steered process development experiments in the lab and supported scale-up processes in addition to supervising and coaching junior metallurgical technicians. In 2016, his primary goal is to use the PI System to improve gold recovery for Barrick Gold.
