Novartis Automation Strategy: The WorkCenter of the Future (WoF)
Novartis aspires to be the BEST pharmaceutical company by 2016. The vision for the Technical Operations organization is “Making QUALITY medicines, on time, every time.” The challenge is how to articulate an automation strategy that enables those business goals, and how to transform data into meaningful and ACTIONABLE information
The strategy is supported by three pillars:
STANDARDIZATION: Novartis implemented the equipment standardization program with the aim “Design one, build many” for 25 manufacturing plants. This concept includes commissioning and qualification, operation procedures and a standard data layer transformed to information visualization and analysis design in the PI System across sites.
TECHNICAL ARCHITECTURE: Novartis needs an innovative technical architecture to reduce complexity. The PI System is now the heart of this automation strategy. The PI System is the common data layer for any data coming from the shop floor and the data gateway to the shop floor. This leads to:
- Simplified interface strategy for all the different vendors and business systems like MES or MVDA.
- Reduction of costs, especially in terms of testing and validation.
WORKCENTER OF THE FUTURE: The WorkCentre of the Future is an initiative supported by the PI System infrastructure that aims to achieve lights out manufacturing, paperless manufacturing and operator cockpits.
The business foundation is to focus on developing a customer driven program, where end users are engaged from the beginning of design. Users are in the driving seat, and technology provides the content and dimension of information specific to user needs. This will enable users not only to look into TaxonomyItemHtml causes of problems, but to take timely preventive actions based on data driven decisions. Also this will enable predictive process understanding and the capability to analyze the complete process through a Continuous Process Verification program (CPV).

Antonio Buendia
ANTONIO BUENDIA, Head of Manufacturing Process Control of NOVARTIS, is responsible for setting the technology direction for the Pharma Division (ca. 25 sites, including Pharma, Chemical and Bio) in terms of automation.
Previously, Buendia worked for Elli Lilly in Madrid, where he shaped site automation strategy and subsequent implementation to drive productivity and quality. He has 20 years’ experience in project management, facilities master planning, solid dosage, liquid dosage, R&D labs, and qualification of facilities, utilities and equipment. This wide experience in Engineering, working closely with Operations, allows him to link the technology dimension to business needs.
Buendia holds a Masters in Industrial Engineering from the University of Comillas in Madrid. He is a founding member of the ISPE Spain, which he chaired 2007-2009, and a member of the international board of directors of the ISPE, Tampa, 2009-2011.
