Optimizing uptime of Syncrude’s fleet of heavy haulers is key to cost-effective productivity at its oilsands mines. Beyond event data acquisition from the hauler’s sophisticated onboard systems, Syncrude has created procedures to raise secondary, synthesized events that are acted upon to prevent major failures. By using both the PI Server and PI ACE framework, Syncrude is piloting a method of leveraging raw onboard data to raise early warning indicators of major component failures, haul road condition deficiencies, and operator care opportunities to reliability specialists. This opens the door for more complex event identification and preventive actions in the future
