Reliable infrastructure is of paramount importance to any business, particularly in power generation where power plants have to operate round the clock to meet market demand and satisfy regulatory requirements (Environmental, NERC, etc.). Plant Operations, Maintenance, Market Analytics, and Engineering functions depend on DCS’s or other computer-based systems. Ability to monitor these systems to determine overall health, provide early detection and prevention of failures, has a direct impact on the company’s bottom-line. In light of emerging business challenges, regulatory requirements and changing market dynamics DTE Energy has implemented an Infrastructure Management System using the PI System infrastructure. This system uses IT Monitor to capture hardware (servers, work stations, UPSs, network switches, and badge readers) and software (OS, Application, System Events, Security Logs) performance data and store it in the PI System. Overall health is computed based on pre-specified failure modes and alarm limits using PI ACE. Early warning and failure notifications are sent to respective administrators using PI Notifications. From a regulatory perspective badge access logs helps in meeting physical security requirements, while event / system security logs help monitor unauthorized access to critical infrastructure. The Infrastructure Management System is currently deployed on 320 servers / workstations and is critical in meeting NERC CIP regulations.
