Following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011 the Japanese government promotes power generation from renewable energy sources. On the other hand, there is concern that rapid increase and over-concentration of variable renewable energy such as wind power may affect grid stability. In order to tackle the issue, a national R&D Project on Grid Integration of Variable Renewable Energy is in progress. This project is promoted by NEDO which is a national R&D agency under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of the Japanese government.
In this project, Itochu Techno-Solutions Corporation is in charge of developing a "Wide-area network monitoring system for wind farms and weather stations" and "wind ramp forecasting system" in eastern Japan. A network monitoring system for wind farms and weather stations will be constructed for more than 40 wind farm sites and more than 400 surface weather station sites. The PI System is the essential IoT platform to collect renewable energy big data such as power output, SCADA and weather data such as wind, pressure, temperature, and to forecast wind power output in eastern Japan.

Nobuyuki Hayasaki is the General Manager of technical department at Itochu Techno-Solutions Corporation that is headquartered in Japan. He is responsible for the national R&D project on grid integration of variable renewable energy in Japan. Currently he focuses on developing wind power output (ramp) forecast technology.
Mr. Hayasaki joined the company in 1999. Since then he has been working in wind and solar consulting, and the grid integration of variable renewable energy using weather simulation. He has a Master of Science degree in Meteorology from Kyushu University."
