Sesto, Italy, is known as one of Eli Lilly’s most innovative plant in regards to industrial automation. For the benefit of a new insulin line, they have instituted a fully integrated paperless scheduling application using PI ACE to implement integration of data exchanges between the manufacturing layer, PMX (Manufacturing Execution System); and the execution layer, Rockwell HMI (as Scada System); Rockwell Batch server; and Rockwell/Siemens PLC’s. The application schedules the manufacturer execution process for all systems on the line, including formulation, filling, component preparation machines (Washer, Autoclaves and Sterilizer). The PI ACE scheduling application is leveraged by use of a redundant PI ACE architecture. It permits a common supplier solution with minimal custom coding and consists of best of breed, such as OSIsoft, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Servers, Rockwell, Kepware and Siemens. Benefits include preventing downtime and production drift by better integrating data exchanges between PMX and the shop floor. Integration with the PI Server allows for improved auditing and monitoring of scheduling activities, centralized configuration of scheduling parameters. Integration with PI ACE allows redundancy support (COTS), common interfacing, reducing development and maintenance cost, implementation of business rules, modularization of scheduling process on a per machine basis. The redundant PI ACE architecture makes a difference when compared to less structured maintenance programs: redundancy simplifies the infrastructure maintenance activities; PI ACE Contexts approach simplifies equipment line maintenance without impacting overall scheduling; PI System and PI ACE integrated architecture guarantees higher efficiency and reliability, reducing failure points that could otherwise be introduced by ad hoc solutions.
