Spain is one of the countries with a high proportion of renewable energy in the European Union. During the last decade the contribution of this new power generation source to the Spanish electrical system has been growing dramatically, reaching up to 64% of daily demand covered by wind generation (reached on 24-Sept-2012). On average, 35% of the yearly energy is contributed by renewable energy (mainly wind and solar) and this ratio will very likely grow in the next decade.
In order to ensure reliable operation of the electrical grid system, REE has deployed a specific control center for renewable energy (CECRE) that supports the daily operations handled by the electrical control center (CECOEL). To support its daily operations, REE relies on very complex telecommunication and data processing systems. Controlling up to a quarter million real-time data streams from more than 2.800 distributed generation sites across the Spanish territory is not a simple challenge to address.
In this presentation REE will show how it is possible to integrate this huge amount of renewable energy into the electrical grid, while ensuring a reliable supply of electricity. This is achieved by obtaining continuous insights into how the electrical market system behaves from the real-time data infrastructure."

ALBERTO GIL MARTÍNEZ is a senior engineer in Red Eléctrica’s Control Center Department in the support area of the National Electrical Control Center (CECOEL), where he has worked for the past seven years. He has been actively involved in supervising day to day real time work of the Dispatch Centre and development of the Control Center for Renewable Energies (CECRE). He holds a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain).
