Improving Network Monitoring with OSIsoft's PI System
ONS is an Independent System Operator (ISO) that currently operates and coordinates the Brazilian Electrical System, known as SIN (National Integrated System). ONS’s operation is divided into four regional centers and has the largest PI System in Latin America, responsible for collecting generation and transmission data from companies that constitute the power grid. Data collected is then available through several PI System applications and reports. One of the main challenges faced by ONS was to improve the monitoring of the telecommunication circuits; they need to guarantee that they are receiving all the information needed from the generation and transmission agents. The methodology applied was: all applications in use by ONS were listed and those with similar features were analyzed to streamline the development of applications that could gather all of the functionalities identified. These applications were specified, approved and the development was initiated. This presentation aims to describe the applications that were developed as a result. PI AF along with data from SCADA and four PI ProcessBook applications were used to replace a larger number of applications previously used for the same purpose. It enables users to search faster, gather data and perform data analysis, including on SCADA data such as availability and latest connections drops, with minimum effort. The PI System is a valuable asset for ONS, not only as a tool for collecting data, but also as a tool to provide operational intelligence."
