Improving Data Quality at Marathon Oil using PI AF and EQM
Historically, Marathon Oil modeled wells, equipment, and metadata in PI and PI Asset Framework (AF) for consumption by users, digital oilfield dashboards and analytics. As Marathon’s implementation of digital oil field technology and analytics increased, so has the complexity of the data. Data in PI is no longer isolated, but rather must line up with data in other systems. This evolution has uncovered several challenges:
• Asset changes impact multiple systems
• Changes must be made to all affected systems consistently and timely
• Manually entered data is error prone and expensive
Marathon’s EQM application was created using the PI AF SDK to improve data quality and reduce effort by automating the creation of well equipment data across systems including fully automating both the PI tag creation process and the maintenance of multiple PI AF models. In its first year of implementation, EQM reduced the overall amount of manual data entry by 90% across all systems.
