Colorado Springs Utilities' Water Quality Assurance team provides clean, safe drinking water to nearly 500,000 people across 2700 miles of water mains across Colorado. Public health is paramount. As our customer service base expands, so do the challenges of effectively managing water quality. We are faced with managing water infrastructure system expansion with fewer resources as budgetary challenges prevent us from hiring additional resources. Compounded by obsolete systems, enterprise integration issues, data discrepancy, redundancy, and data sharing issues contributed to operational inefficiencies. To overcome these obstacles we turned to OSIsoft and the PI System.
By creating PI System dashboard displays and using PI DataLink, we are able to visualize large amounts of data, including all enterprise data sources on a single platform, source to tap critical information such as water treatment processes, water distribution system performance, water quality monitoring sites, source trace mapping, customer services calls and regulatory compliance and process control sample parameters. The system has created an opportunity for business processes to be optimized, ability to customize how data is communicated and leveraged, and has provided a venue to "telling our data story" in an easily tailored and usable format that is clear to all.
This presentation discusses how PI Notifications and other technologies have helped us reduce operational costs by reducing costly repairs associated with water quality critical infrastructure failures, improved data turnaround times, improved business processes and ultimately revolutionized methods of business for us at Colorado Springs Utilities."
