The Global Data Center Services: Tools and Automation Team from Hewlett Packard strikes again!
Using OSIsoft’ s PI System, HP was able to unify rack level environmental data from temperature/humidity sensors as well as HP Intelligent Power Distribution Units (iPDU) into a comprehensive solution that delivers increased awareness and robust analytical capability for Data Center operators and technicians.
As a result of this effort, the Tools and Automation Team was able to create a Cooling Optimization Index Number (COIN). This measurement is a key performance indicator that allows management to know which compute spaces are performing optimally in terms of cooling and heating.
This figure also identifies which rooms to cool more efficiently so data center operators can take further action by addressing the locations that demand operational improvement with activities such as more efficient hot-aisle/ cold-aisle containment, installing air sealing panels, variable flow tiles, and other actions.
The information collected has led to an increased savings in both utility costs and equipment life with regards to cooling our data centers.
