At any given point in the day, E-commerce powerhouse eBay has 88 million active users. Next year, the company will begin using a green data center that will handle more than a third of its IT infrastructure. The site is being built to LEED Gold status by Skanska Mission Critical Construction.
eBay wanted their monitoring system to achieve four goals: a small number of skilled engineers can manage the data center; energy consumers (racks) are tightly controlled; the facility can be monitored by the corporate HQ IT staff 1200 miles away; and data center facility changes can be performed by any data center manager at any eBay location. eBay monitors this site using OSIsoft PI. Very soon, a select few engineers, managers and eBay executives can walk up to an eBay computer and review data center operational summaries (e.g. PUE, IT load, total power consumed), schedule work items using asset records (i.e. conditions based maintenance), and even turn the lights off.
How this is done, how databases are built, how redundancy is handled, how enterprise applications are connected and why it was architected this way will be described.
