With PI already in place at the plants, George leveraged this architecture to use PI for bi-directional communication between PJM and the plants. One of the most interesting aspects of this approach is the health display that George developed to monitor the reliability of all hardware and software components. We have seen utilities and vendors struggling with cost and reliability as organizations deregulate and the gap between generation and transmission widens even further. In this environment, some see the components of PI are far easier solution than the cost of new hardware.
