Presentation: Gaining Operational Intelligence from BIG DATA Using Emerging Self-service Technologies

For most utilities, real-time operational data tools are focused on time-related analysis. Although these tools have proven essential, many factors that affect performance occur spontaneously and are often not time synchronized, for example, asset age, operating conditions, demand patterns, and equipment failure rates. Gaining valuable intelligence on how these factors affect performance can be critical. Typically, questions related to these factors result in a search and find mission, requiring a significant data gathering effort to identify operating periods when conditions were just right to extract data for the targeted analysis. Therefore, much analysis is left undone. This paper will describe recently available technologies that empower utility users by providing self-service analytical tools from within their desktop spreadsheet. These tools bring the power of multidimensional data analysis to the forefront of every utility user’s innovation. In addition, they are supported by a collaborative environment that can quickly promote a better understanding of the vast amount of existing utility data to a group or throughout the enterprise. This presentation will demonstrate the power of leveraging self-service BI technology to build the “Big Analytics” for business insight with metering “Big Data”.
