The province of Ontario deregulated its electricity market in May 2002. A new entity was created, the Independent electricity Market Operator (IMO), to manage supply and demand, and allow free price fluctuation. Abitibi Consolidated Inc, with its five Ontario pulp and paper mills, buys more than CDN$100 million annually, which makes it the largest consumer in the province. The ACI team has succeeded in developing its own Energy Management System, using the PI System as the backbone, coupled with PI to PI and PI HTML interfaces. This EMS was developed at a fraction of the cost of equivalent commercial software solutions and demonstrated the leverage provided by the global PI infrastructure of ACI. This project won one of the 2002 InfoWorld 100 awards. The award is given to the top 100 companies who complete the Most Innovative Technology Projects.
